Whitcomb writes makes her stories mesmerizing and haunting. There is a lot of humor here. As someone who has been spending time in the Philippines for years, I can attest to the author's story. The images are very low resolution and the floor plans are unreadable even with magnification. Beecher's last few years are covered in a scant two or three pages. That’s where I have beaten Christ. But I became okay with that after a while, even though I struggled sometimes to make the connection between the topic and where it connected to her story. I eat more vegetarian meals and I have learned several new cooking techniques, even though I have been cooking for over 50 years. There is an unfortunate academic snobbery that smells of if-it-isn't-Joyce-it's-not-literature in many circles.

Quite often, I had to question why Hugh didn't have a set direction in life. Related in his voice, the story is full of his musings. He knew very well what caused him to be a wanderer or a nomad of sort. Even without the quiet prodding of his moth...
